Judged on every single fry

Anyone can claim to be the best chippy in Bromsgrove. We'd rather show you what's behind the counter and let you make your own mind up.

You won't find a wall of glowing quotes on this page. We don't write our own reviews, and a takeaway that makes up its own praise isn't one you should be trusting with your tea. What we can point you to is a shop that's been run the same way, on the same road, since Terry Mouskos took it on in 2008 — a third-generation fish fryer who learned the trade from his family — and an official hygiene rating anyone can look up.

The rest is down to you. If the fish, chips and kebabs going over the counter at 110 Birmingham Road aren't right, nothing else matters.

The things we'll happily be judged on

No marketing talk — just what actually happens here, every service:

• Family-run since 2008. Terry is a third-generation fish fryer. He took the shop on in 2008 and gave it a full revamp in 2009.
• Lincolnshire potatoes. Our chips start as proper chipping spuds, not something tipped out of a freezer bag.
• Fried in Frymax. Clean vegetable oil, a crisp fry, none of the heaviness.
• Cooked when you order it. Nothing sits under a lamp waiting for you — which is exactly why collection takes 10–15 minutes rather than ten seconds.
• Open six days a week. Monday to Saturday evenings, plus Friday and Saturday lunchtimes. Closed Sundays.

Every one of those is something you can check for yourself, which is rather the point.

A 5-star Food Hygiene Rating to back it up

Taste is one half of the story — the other is what goes on behind the counter, and that half isn't a matter of opinion. Ideal Fish & Chips holds a 5-star Food Hygiene Rating from the Food Standards Agency, the highest score there is, following our inspection on 19 July 2024.

That rating isn't ours to award. The council inspects, the Food Standards Agency publishes the result, and you can look it up on the FSA website rather than take our word for it — which is how it should be.

It fits with how we work: Lincolnshire potatoes chipped for the fryer, everything cooked in Frymax vegetable oil, all in a shop Terry fully revamped back in 2009. Whether your order is a Large Cod, a Doner Pitta or a Steak and Kidney Pie, you know exactly the standard it was prepared to.

The dishes people keep coming back for

We won't put words in our customers' mouths — but the order slips tell their own story. These favourites come up again and again:

• Large Cod (£9.60) — the classic, fried to order in crisp golden batter
• Mini Cod (£6.60) — the same fish, sized for a lighter supper
• Chips (from £3.50) — Lincolnshire potatoes, cut and fried properly
• Kebab Box (£7.99) — doner, tandoori or Mediterranean chicken over a cone of chips, sauce on top
